Full Review - SumZero

SumZero is a community of buy-side investment professionals working at hedge funds, mutual funds, and private equity funds. The site claims to have attracted 12,000 pre-screened professionals that post ideas or pay for access.

SumZero Pros & Cons

Pros

Very wide stock coverage in U.S. and abroad
High number of new investment write-ups are posted on a daily basis
Modern user interface with extensive screening functionalities
Free access for buyside analysts who contribute investment research, however, application required
A good resource for researching on a particular stock and discovering new investment ideas

Cons

Very expensive at $7500/year
Contributor access available for buy-side analysts only
Limited discussions and follow-ups on investment ideas - much lower user engagement compared to Special Situation Investments or Value Investors Club
Too many ideas on a daily basis result in too much noise and make it difficult to discover new actionable investment opportunities
Most write-ups are copy pasted from internal presentations and research of the buy-side analysts (i.e. proprietary research). Original content meant specifically for SumZero is limited

The platform uses a modern and user-friendly interface to offer research published by professionals at legitimate buy-side funds.

Expensive subscription

Anyone can join the SumZero investment community by paying the annual fee of $350/year (lite), $1500/year (premium) or $7500/year (elite). Nevertheless, cheaper subscriptions don't give full access to detailed investment analysis, research and annual top stocks reports making elite elite membership (the most expensive) the only one worthy of consideration. Buy-side analysts who share investment research can apply to receive free access to investment service.

Wide coverage of investing opportunities

SumZero content is generated by buy-side funds - hedge funds, mutual funds, and PE firms. The community has a wide stock coverage in the U.S. and abroad. Also, the platform fosters sharing of proprietary investment reports and offers additional member services, such as buy-side career placements.

Non-curated content

Too many ideas are shared on SumZero on daily basis. The high amount makes it difficult to filter out good ideas from the noise since there’s very limited curation and vetting of the submitted investment research. Most write-ups are copy-pasted from internal fund presentations and research.
